As the wedding ring seems to have eclipsed the traditional mangalsutra for many modern Hindus, this trend begs the question: on which hand do you wear your ring?

Western tradition (except for a few European and South American countries) dictates the wedding ring be worn on the left hand – a tradition that most likely stemmed from the belief that the left ring finger contained a vein that ran directly to the heart.

Indian traditions seem to vary by region and/or family (surprise), but in many parts of India the left hand is considered “unclean,” ergo not a suitable place for a wedding ring. ┬áPersonally, my husband and I are “righties” – in our traditional South Indian wedding, our priest directed the wedding rings be placed on the right hand, and that’s where they stayed (and my engagement ring moved over to make the pair).

What’s your tradition?
